Yield, nitrogen, and water use benefits of diversifying crop rotations with specialty oilseeds

چکیده

Decreased agricultural diversity from extensive use of the corn (Zea mays L.)- soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) rotation and occasional inclusion spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), has threatened cropping system sustainability. Using specialty oilseeds crops to extend corn-soybean might improve yields promote We tested whether corn, soybean, would be improved in a following oilseed versus or soybean. In Phase 1, replicated blocks nine different flowering two traditional grain (corn soybean) were grown. phase 2, planted perpendicular previous year crops. This 2-year was repeated for three site-years, Morris, MN one Brookings, SD. Soil water balance evaluated during 1 determine seasonal use. Potential N mineralization measured prior planting subset treatments (spring canola, cuphea, soybean). Linear mixed models used analyze 2 yield responses crop. dynamics also analyzed with models. Corn higher any crop other than corn. Soybean did not significantly respond Yield patterns partially explained by potential Spring canola provided net nitrification compared Canola, camelina, borage, crambe had lower both at least site-year. short-term study indicated that similar rotation. Further, additional environmental benefits.

Diversifying crop rotations with pulses enhances system productivity

Agriculture in rainfed dry areas is often challenged by inadequate water and nutrient supplies. Summerfallowing has been used to conserve rainwater and promote the release of nitrogen via the N mineralization of soil organic matter. However, summerfallowing leaves land without any crops planted for one entire growing season, creating lost production opportunity. Additionally, summerfallowing ha...

Nitrogen Use in Durum and Selected Brassicaceae Oilseeds in Two-Year Rotations

Brassicaceae oilseeds can serve as potential feedstocks for renewable biofuels to offset demand for petroleumbased alternatives. However, little is known about oilseed crop yield potential and N use in semiarid, wheat (Triticum spp.)-based cropping systems that dominate the northern Great Plains (NGP). A 5-yr study was conducted in northeast Montana to investigate the yield potential of a direc...

Maize response to water, salinity and nitrogen levels: yield-water relation, water-use efficiency and water uptake reduction function

Water, salinity and nitrogen are the major factors affecting maize production in arid and semi-arid areas. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of different water, salinity and nitrogen levels on yield-water relationships, water use, water productivity (WP), water use efficiency (WUE) and water uptake reduction function by maize hybrid SC-704 in a semi-arid area and ...
